About the Nutrition Calculator

The Nutrition Calculator uses the Mifflin Equation for estimating Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) based on age, gender, weight and height. RMR is the amount of energy expended per day while at rest.

For Men
Resting Energy Expenditure (kcal/ 24 H.) = (10 x Weight [kg]) + (6.25 x Height [cm]) - (5 x Age) + 5

For Women
Resting Energy Expenditure (kcal/ 24 H.) = (10 x Weight [kg]) + (6.25 x Height [cm]) - (5 x Age) - 161

After the RMR is determined the equations is extended to include average activity levels and thereby calculating a good guideline for minimum daily calorie requirement.

Average activity levels used for the equation
• Sedentary-Little or no exercise and a desk job
• Lightly Active -Light exercise or sports 1-3 days a week
• Moderately Active-Moderate exercise or sports 3-5 days a week
• Very Active-Hard exercise or sports 6-7 days a week
• Extremely Active-Hard daily exercise or sports and physical job

The calculated result, including dietary reference values (i.e. Protein, Fat, Carbohydrates, and Fibre, etc.) gives you the recommended nutrients intake and amount of calories you need to maintain a balanced diet.

These equations however, do not take into account an individual's body composition (i.e. body fat, muscle mass, frame size, medical condition, and pregnancy, etc.) and therefore are always inaccurate.

Like with GDAs results from the Nutrition Calculator are guideline estimates and should only be used for the purpose of helping you to put the nutritional information (i.e. fat, saturated fats, sugar, salt, carbohydrates, etc.) of a particular product into the context of your overall diet.

The tool is not intended to deal with an individual's medical condition. You should always consult your doctor or a professional dietician before starting a weight loss program.
